If you don't know, MTV is having this World Cup of Rock thing going on where fans can vote for their favourite country (Depending on where your favourite band is from)..
Somehow, Dir en grey was chosen to represent Japan (maybe because they have more exposure than the rest)
They pitched them against Germany's Tokio Hotel.. needless to say, it was not a tough decision for me as I have alot of things to say about Tokio Hotel that will make their fans come after me with knives - screaming murder.
But, in the article, they wrote (and I quote) "But can the blitzkrieg delivered care of fans of Tokio Hotel be enough to overcome the surprising surge by the fans voting for Japan (mostly on the strength of the Japanese metal contingent, lead by legends Dir En Grey)."
A fan of Dir en grey, I am. A big fan.... but 'legends'?
In my opinion, HONEST OPINION (and you may beg to differ) Dir en grey is hardly worthy of legendary status yet. Even if this is in the Japanese rock scene context, Dir en grey has a little bit more to go before they can be declared legendary. There are many bands in Japan that can be called legendary for forever changing the landscape, and I don't just mean X Japan either, but really Dir en grey is big and popular but I really doubt they are legendary yet.
And 'metal'? Dir en grey is rock, through and through. Maybe it may seem to be bordering on metal but they are definitely not metal..
And another thing that I'm going to pick at MTV about...
TOKIO HOTEL?! Didn't you say this is the 'World Cup of Rock'?
Why in the Lord's name did you people pick Tokio Hotel?????
Obviously this was more about popularity than it was about being ACTUAL ROCK music.
I'm very sure that there are BETTER rock bands in the country than this Tokio Hotel!
To begin with, I've never really thought of Tokio Hotel as rock. I just remembered seeing them and wondering why the lead singer looks like he's trying really hard to look VK... and why he sings like he's in a boyband.
(This is where I run off as what I said earlier about fans screaming murder still stands)
