I first began reading GetBackers at age 11 when my second sister came home one day with volumes 1 to 3 of the Malay version.
I read it all the time and everything about it piqued my imagination.
From the men with extraordinary powers.. to the Unlimited Fortress or as it's called in the original Japanese version, "Mugenjou" (which translates as unlimited castle/fortress).
I always thought "It'd be cool if such a place exists"
Imagine, a place with absolutely no law.
You can do anything and the long hand of the law will never reach you because they have sworn never to touch such a place.
It drove my imagination wild.
Mugenjou as it appears in the manga

I never thought it possible but... a few days ago, I discovered an article about the Kowloon Walled City.
A picture of the dank, dark hallways cannot be found and these are pictures of the few areas that were lit by sunlight

It was so densely populated that they kept building ON it and it rendered the lower levels void of any sunlight and had to be illuminated using fluorescents.
It was a city of mazes and scraps leftover from the constant building.
It was a hotbed of crime and was controlled by the triads.
It was unsanitary and damp at all times.

The place that was once, for me, an imaginary place I could only dream of, is actually a real place.
However, it has been demolished (1993).
And I shouldn't bear any hope to ever see it.
(I saved the article and decided to only read into it today.. that's when I discovered the similarities between Mugenjou and this city)
Unsurprisingly, many writers/creators of anything have been influenced by this city.
Too bad they tore it down.
Would've been a really interesting place for tourism XD
